A hilarious “behind the scenes” peek into the world of recording…

•April 1, 2009 • 1 Comment

As you guys have probably figured out by now, I love music and everything related to music. Lately, I’ve been very interested in recording and mixing music, I’m thinking of picking up a MIDI controller and getting a decent audio interface to start making some pro-sounding recordings. Anyways, during one of my “google search escapades”, I came across THIS SITE. The diaries section is some of the funniest stuff that I’ve read in a loooooong time. Check it out, it’s quite ridiculously funny, but at the same time the diaries contain a wealth of information concerning recording / mixing records.

YES……FINALLY!!!

FINALLY FOUND A BASS PLAYER!!! Sorry for the lack of posts, I’ve been very busy with my band and school. Anyways, the bassist is a great player and it seems like the stars are finally aligning for my band. We were expecting to find a semi-decent bass player that we would have to train, but instead we found a great, experienced guy with solid chops and great groove. I’m pretty damn ecstatic right now. Anyways, if there are any local readers reading this (GVA, Surrey, White Rock), you should look forward to attending some of our gigs. We’ve taken up the name BMX Chicken for now and we will be gigging locally in the near future.

Rock on!

Oh baby, discover new music for free, RIGHT NOW

I recently stumbled upon this awesome service called Last.fm. It is essentially an internet radio service, it’s completely free and the amount of music in last.fm is absoluletely astounding. The internet radio service has tens of thousands of songs and you will without a doubt find some music that you like.

Essentially, all you have to do is download the program and then type in the name of an artist that you like or a genre of music and last.fm will find music that suits your tastes. The more you listen to last.fm, the better the program will get to know you and your musical tastes better. After a couple of days of use, the program will basically analyze your musical tastes and reccomend songs and artists for you. You can listen to full length songs via the service and if you so choose to, you can purchase them from itunes or amazon via a link. The audio streaming works impeccably and the songs all have high sound quality.

Last.fm is similar to Pandora, but Pandora is restricted to only American users. Last.fm is based in the UK, but the service works worldwide.

Click here to check out Last.FM and discover some music

Thanks to Last.FM, I’ve discovered at least 20 awesome new bands that I really enjoy in the past week. I probably would have never stumbled upon these bands in my lifetime if it weren’t for last.fm.

I’ll make it brief, because I’ve got a lot of homework to do and I have 2 exams to study for.

Ong Bag is the #1 must-watch martial arts movie in the history of mankind. Seriously, Ong Bak is amazing and Tony Jaa is one of the most gifted martial artists on the planet. WATCH IT NOW.

Twitter – what the heck is it?

•February 8, 2009 • 4 Comments

Everyone has probably heard of Twitter at this point. Yet, many people still don’t know just what it does. I was one of those people, until today. Basically, Twitter is a social networking site, much like myspace or facebook. The difference is that twitter revolves around one question: “what are you doing?”.

This is what a basic twitter page looks like. You first set up your profile and then you type in what you are doing. You can add friends and friends can add you. Friends in twitter are called “followers”. By “following” someone, you are essentially subscribing to their twitter page. You will see that person’s status updates and you will be able to comment on that person’s status. Your own followers will do the same for you. Twitter might seem kind of stupid and less personal than say –facebook. Truth be told, it is. Twitter is basically a social networking service that revolves around “status updates”. Think facebook, but only with “status updates”. You might be thinking “what the heck is the point of Twitter then?”. Well, the way I see it, Twitter is a different kind of social networking from Facebook. Facebook is more personal and revolves around keeping in touch with your real friends. Hence the reason why you don’t accept random friend requests on FB, because you wouln’t want random strangers to access your private info. Twitter on the other hand is much more open-ended and less personal, it revolves around connecting random people from all walks of life over the web. In short, Facebook is for keeping up with your “real life friends” and twitter is more tailored towards making “cyber friends”.

What the heck? Futureshop = a bunch of satanists?!

•February 2, 2009 • 2 Comments

Okay, the title might be a bit of an exaggeration….BUT….explain this

Apparently, for the wonderful price of 666 dollars, you can own a brand new Canon HD Camcorder. How nice of Futureshop to give us a discount of $83.31 (such a random number) so that we can purchase our electronics at the lovely price of 666… Seriously. What the heck? No way this is a coincidence.

Great Flick: Burn After Reading

•January 24, 2009 • 1 Comment

So it’s the weekend and I’ve finished most of my exams! I only have 1 to go, but it’s on tuesday so I’ve decided to take this weekend to relax and be chillin’ like a villain in order to rejuvenate my fried brain cells (courtesy of the physics final). I caught a massive cold and was dead tired on friday, so I pretty much slept like a log. I woke up close to noon today and have been wearing PJs and watching movies for pretty much the whole day. I kicked off my movie marathon with Dr. Zhivago, a great movie, especially for those who are interested in Russian history. Anyways, I watched a bunch of movies, but the one that caught my attention today was Burn After Reading. It’s a fairly recent film (2008), I wanted to see it in theaters, but I didn’t have the time. I watched it for the first time today and found it to be highly entertaining.

Burn After Reading stars some very familiar actors (Pitt and Clooney for starters) and casts them into a haphazard plot. Chad (Pitt) a personal trainer at a local gym stumbles upon some documents written by an ex-CIA analyst. The documents are in fact of no importance, but Chad and his friend Linda believe them to be some kind of top secret CIA files. That’s the basis for the plot. I won’t spoil the rest, in case you haven’t watched the movie. Anyways the plot is absolutely ridiculous and funny. For a good chunk of the movie, you will be thinking “what the heck is going on?”, but in the end it all makes sense. It’s not a classic movie (eg. Titanic) that you will be watching over and over again ’til the end of time, but it is a highly entertaining 1-time rollercoaster ride. I highly reccomend Burn After Reading for a “friday/saturday night” rental.

GAAAHHHHH I HATE FINAL EXAMS (P.S. Happy Inauguration Day!!!)

•January 20, 2009 • 3 Comments

Man…finals week sucks… So much pressure and so much crap to study. I especially hate relearning stuff. For instance, I have a final in physics that counts for 30% of my final mark and I have to relearn stuff from earlier chapters and I honestly don’t remember how to do most of this stuff at all. I’m also a chronic procrastinator, so that doesn’t help in any way. Oh well, I’ll make it…somehow. I get most of the week off once I finish my provincial exam, so that’ll be cool.

P.S. Happy inauguration day, Obama’s speech was excellent! Once again, I am not American, I live in Canada, but nonetheless, I’m quite interested in the Obama presidency and I think he will be one of the greatest leaders of our time. I’m confident that America has made the right choice! Right on Americans! Much love from your Canadian bros ❤
